wonder woman (1987) #161

this is so beautiful to me. the plot is "clayface discovers wonder woman is made of magical clay and Wants That Special Clay so he steals part of her body and now they have to figure out how to separate clayface clay from wonder woman clay" and the solution is a giant mystical centrifuge in the sky because the clays have two different densities. i love you absolutely batshit bonkers comic book plots i love you so much im healing im rejuvenated

Percy doesn't pick Luke to join him on the quest because he knows that he'll be betrayed by a friend. Percy knows that he can't bear to be betrayed by Luke, so he makes sure that Luke doesn't go with him on the quest, and instead picks Annabeth because he can't imagine becoming friends with Annabeth!

i was looking through the actual book of the world of ice and fire, just to see the art, and I forgot that on the first page, where it says “to his esteemed and gracious lord, tommen the first of his name” blah blah to celebrate his reign, but you can see that maester yandel initially wrote it for robert, then he got murdered, so yandel blotted out his name and put joffrey, then HE got murdered, so yandel blotted out his name too and put tommen. this poor man, can u imagine him being like “maybe i’m young enough to write another great history tome, let’s see if i can convince tommen to fund another vanity project” and then within like 6 months, tommen dies, myrcella is crowned, myrcella dies, the targaryens come BACK, aegon vi is crowned, dany lands and announces her crown, the north decides to shake things up and starts chucking crowns at every stark they see, and yandel is desperately blotting out yet another name on the damn title page

im ripping through the Obelisk Gate pretty fast, I think it is definitely suffering a bit from classic "middle book slog" but it's still like, really INTRESTING -- it's just slow. deep breaths and such. I mean there is about to be a lot of action (possibly) due to the counquering army and all that but I do think that this slowness compounds with my general frustration w characters who do not tell you things you want to know, or who dont care to ask about things you want to know -- I am still enjoying it and this is still part of the book's charm, honestly, but it is a bit more annoying in book 2 vs book 1 because of the overall stillness.

A lot of things are being set up that i am not sure what to think of yet -- (big spoiler warning)

Hoa gives me a lot of pauses, I LIKE him but I don't trust him and he knows so much he isn't saying. Alabaster died without ever really giving me (the reader) all the info I want from him, which is frustrating.

More signifigantly, I did not expect Schaffa and Nassun to be... whatever they are now, and I'm not sure what to think. I mean the fucking Lolita of it all....... so while the idea of Schaffa Humbert Warrant getting anything resembling a redemption arc feels very in line with the book (no one gets what they deserve, people do terrible things, and then what happens in the long-after?) it doesn't FEEL good. it's interesting bc of how much that whole storyline also defangs Essun's original revenge plan against Jija, which is is like. It's unnecessary, maybe. Killing him won't bring back her son, and he has already suffered, and and and. maybe that is part of the message, I guess, when the entire crux of the series seems to rest on the idea that we hurt the Earth, and this is his vengeance, and at what point does vengence stop being justified. is it ever justified. Killing Uche broke Jija, what point is there in breaking him more besides self-delusion. When Syenite killed Coru it broke her, and Alabastor cannot forgive Essun for him but what point is there in revenge. And Alabaster did destroy Yumenes in revenge, but that's not the.... the point? His goal is to fix things and revenge is just one of the ways to get there. many thoughts. going back in.
